The Victorian vibrator (or ‘Electro-Massage Machine’) was perscribed to women with hysteria around the 19th century. Doctors believed that women had a certain amount of ‘female semen’ in their bodies that would build up and cause many of the side effects associated with hysteria. Releasing the fluids through a ‘massage’ or any form of stimualtion would release the fluid and conclude in a ‘hysterical paroxysm’ something modern doctors and patients alike would understand to be an orgasm. Doctors, reluctant to do the task themselves and to maintain the “purity” of the patient, created the electric manipulator, which soon evolved into what we know as the modern day vibrator.

“Glad tidings for all women” indeed! CURES HEADACHES
She was desperate and she was choosey at the same time and, in a way, beautiful, but she didn’t have quite enough going for her to become what she imagined herself to be.
